The genre of our film will be action/thriller, as it is about a writer who gets into trouble with the wrong people for trying to publish a book, on a corrupt politician, revealing his secrets. However, it will be hard to establish how the writer is going to try and publish the book is, and what he is going to do about it, bringing in the thriller aspect, with a lot of action sequences. To increase the thriller aspect, there will be a twist towards the end of the film, where you find out the writer is no longer who you thought he was. One of the main reasons we chose this genre is that action and thriller are some of the most popular genres, and therefore if we combine them we will have a much wider target audience.
We looked at other films with our genre such as ‘The Town’ and “The Departed”. We looked at the way they put the genre across and some of the key conventions of that genre. The opening to both of these, is subtle and calm making the audience feel safe, and being able to relate to the film, falsely reassuring them for what is about to come.
.
They also usually contain popular, famous songs, inanatempt to catch the audience’s attention and help them indentify with the film. We have decided to keep our opening shocking, by including the oppening chareacter getting beaten up. We have also decided to use a song we believe to be familiar with the majoruity of our taget audiance. We want a happy relaxing song to open our film, to falsely reassure the audience, when looking around at what music is out there, we decided that we would like the song Frank Sinatra’s “Fly me to the moon”, Here is the video…
We then showed this song in a few surveys and we found that the majority of peopel fthought the song was quite old and did not represent the timeperiodofthefilm. we then looked into other songs, and found a recenthit, which webeleived to be more suitable, which is Pencil Full of Lead by Paulo Nutini. the song is embeded below.
Other conventions of thriller films are that they often open with lots of tracking shots and pan shots, to help[set the scene, and we wish to do the same, with our opening scene, where the protagonist is driving along. We found the bank scene in The Dark Night to be a good example of this, here it is..

In thrillers, they often use close-ups, to help the audiance sypethise withthe character and understand him. We hope to do this with shots in the wing mirrors and rear view mirror while the actor is drivign along and, with our antagonist while he is beating up the protagonist in the second scene.
This is an example of a close up …
They also often use establishing shots at the beginning fo the film, to help set the scene, we will use an establishing shot to open our film, here is an example of an establishing shot…
In terms of editing, thrillers often use jump cuts, to fill the audience in on everything that is going on quickly, and to maintain the fast pace. They are also used to relate things within a film. We are going to use a jump cut at the beggining of our film to the audience realise that the driver and writer of the book, is the same person that is getting beaten up in the second scene. We also noticed that in these films they create the thriller aspect by keeping the audience guessing about what might happen and then doing the complete opposite, we plan to use this convention in our movie, and create the same shock to our audience.
